Questions about this converter
Find answers to common questions.
How do I turn a text file into an Anki deck?
Paste the text into the box above, or drop a .txt file on it. Each line becomes one card, with the two sides split by the separator you choose. Check the preview, name the deck, and download the .apkg: Anki imports it with a double-click, no add-on and no import dialog.
Is the text to Anki converter free?
Yes. No signup, no credit, no limit on how many times you use it. The conversion happens inside your browser tab, so it costs us nothing to run.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The text is parsed and packaged in the browser and never reaches a server, which is also why the page keeps working if your connection drops after it has loaded.
What if my list has no translations, only words?
This converter formats what you already have, so a one-sided list gives you nothing to put on the back. The Anki generator is the tool for that case: it takes the same list and writes the translation, an example sentence and pronunciation audio for each word.
Can I use a dash or a colon instead of a tab?
Not directly. The converter reads tab, comma, semicolon and pipe, because those are the separators spreadsheets and exports actually produce. For a dash or a colon, replace it with a tab in your editor first and the list is ready.
Does the deck come with pronunciation audio?
Not from this converter, since it only reformats the text you paste. Audio is generated when the cards are, so use the Anki generator if you want the mp3 files embedded in the .apkg.
How many cards can I convert at once?
Up to 20,000 notes, and files up to 5 MB. The limit is there so the browser tab stays responsive, not to push you toward an account.
No file to convert yet?
NextLang writes the cards for you: paste any text and get a deck with translations and example sentences, ready for the same import.
