Italian for trains: tickets, validating and platforms

Italian trains have one rule that catches almost every visitor out: paper tickets must be validated before boarding, or it counts as fare-dodging. These are the phrases for getting it right, plus the words that look alarming in English and aren't.

Buying and finding your train

  • Un biglietto per Firenze, per favore.

    One ticket to Florence, please.

  • Da che binario parte?

Which platform does it leave from?

binario looks like binary, but it means platform or track.

  • È un treno veloce o regionale?

Is this a fast train or a regional one?

  • Serve la prenotazione del posto?

Do I need a seat reservation?

  • Questo posto è occupato?

    Is this seat taken?

Before boarding

  • Devo obliterare questo biglietto?

Do I need to validate this ticket?

obliterare looks like obliterate, but it means to validate or stamp the ticket before boarding.

  • Dov'è la macchinetta per obliterare?

    Where's the validating machine?

  • Attualmente questo treno è in orario.

Currently, this train is on time.

attualmente means currently, not actually. Actually is in realtà.

  • Forse alla fine prendo un treno prima.

I might eventually take an earlier train.

eventualmente means possibly, not eventually. Eventually is alla fine or col tempo.

  • Dove metto la firma per la prenotazione?

Where do I sign for the reservation?

firma means signature, not a company. A firm/company is azienda or ditta.

Delays and problems

  • Il treno è in ritardo?

    Is the train delayed?

  • Di quanto è il ritardo?

    How long is the delay?

  • Ho perso la coincidenza.

    I missed my connection.

  • Scusi, è questo il treno per Milano?

Excuse me, is this the train to Milan?

  • Può aiutarmi a trovare il mio posto?

Could you help me find my seat?

False friend traps

  • binario looks like binary, but means platform, track

Treno al binario 5 means the train is on platform 5. It has nothing to do with binary code.

  • obliterare looks like obliterate, but means to validate, stamp a ticket

Skipping this step on a paper ticket is treated as fare evasion, even if you meant to pay. It's the single most useful word on this list.

  • attualmente looks like actually, but means currently, presently

Attualmente vivo a Roma means I currently live in Rome. Actually, in fact, is in realtà.

  • eventualmente looks like eventually, but means possibly, if it comes to that

Eventualmente potrei restare means I might possibly stay. Eventually, after a while, is alla fine or col tempo.

  • firma looks like firm (a company), but means signature

Metti la firma qui means sign here. A company or firm is azienda or ditta.

FAQ

Common questions

Short answers to what people ask most about this situation.

What happens if I forget to validate my ticket?

If a conductor checks and the ticket isn't stamped, it's treated as if you have no valid ticket, and you can be fined on the spot even if you meant to validate it. Look for the small green or yellow machines on the platform before boarding.

Do e-tickets need validating too?

No. Tickets bought online or through an app with a QR code or a fixed date and time are already valid for that specific train and don't need the machine.

What's the difference between Frecciarossa, Intercity and Regionale?

Frecciarossa and Italo are the fast, expensive services between major cities with mandatory seat reservations. Intercity is a step down in speed and price. Regionale trains are the cheapest, stop everywhere, and use the validating machines.

Is it normal for trains to run late?

Regional trains especially can run a few minutes behind schedule. Anything over an hour on a long-distance Frecciarossa or Italo route can sometimes qualify for a partial refund, claimed through the operator's app or website.
